Cognitively Guided Instruction - Caryn Camp.

This paper describes a research-based teacher professional development program for elementary school mathematics and includes an overview of cognitively guided instruction (CGI). Also described are the CGI professional development program and the research base for CGI with regard to children's thinking; teachers' knowledge.

This paper describes an instructional approach to mathematics in the primary grades. The approach, based on twenty years of research, is called Cognitively Guided Instruction. It is an approach grounded in the philosophy of constructivism, the cognitive developmental stages of Piaget, and the process standards set forth by the National.

Cognitively Guided Instruction It starts with what your students already know and builds on their natural number sense and intuitive approaches to problem solving. Rather than a math program or curriculum, CGI is a way of listening to students, asking smart questions, and engaging with their thinking—all with the goal of uncovering and expanding every student’s mathematical understanding.

Carey, (1988) conducted a research on how the thinking of children could be used to make teaching and learning of mathematics more meaningful. Out of their research, they developed the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI). Interventions designed to address challenges in the teaching and learning of mathematics must take into.

Cognitively Guided Instruction. Cognitively Guided Instruction is a pedagogical approach that reaches beyond the curriculum barriers of dominant culture education. The teaching strategies encouraged by this approach are also based on guidelines directed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

There were three test forms corresponding to grades 3, 4, and 5. These tests were designed to be vertically equated. The student achievement scores from these tests were used as pretest covariates in a randomized trial of a teacher professional development program based on Cognitively Guided Instruction. Cognitively Guided Instruction Cognitively Guided Instruction is an inquiry-based approach to teaching mathematics that was developed at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (Carpenter et al, 1999). This extensively researched approach provides teachers with knowledge about the developmental stages of children’s mathematical reasoning.

I am currently working with various schools and Local Authorities in supporting teachers’ learning of children’s mathematical thinking and how to connect this with practice through Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI). CGI is a professional development programme for teachers based on over 30 years of research.

This article discusses a primary level mathematics research program, Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), which investigates the impact of providing primary teachers with access to a structured, coherent body of knowledge about children's thinking in mathematics on teachers' knowledge and beliefs, their instruction, and their students' learning.

Cognitive guided instruction was initially developed by researchers at University of Wisconsin in 1980’s. Fennema, Franke, Levi, Jacobs and Empson (1996) found that learning to understand students mathematical thinking could lead to fundamental changes in teachers beliefs and practices and that these changes, in turn, reflected in students’ learning.
